The Spotlight Is On. . . . .
Two Noted Composers featured in the BriLee Catalog
This year, BriLee was honored to publish commissioned works by 2 composers for 2 choirs chosen to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association State Conference. Laura Farnell composed the beautiful "Let Beauty Awake!" (BL595) for the Wilow Wood Junior High Varsity Treble Choir, Sherry Miller, director. Laura based the text on the wonderful poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson. The performance of this SSA composition was thrilling.

Mark Patterson penned "Life Has Loveliness" (BL571) for the Mitchell Intermediate Honor Choir, Connie Horton and Cyndie Lowry, directors. The 2-pt choral was absolutely beautifully performed by the talented and hard-working group of 5th graders.

Be sure to listen for both of these works on the 2008-2009 CD sampler from BriLee Music.

Solo Song Books

You made the request and have heard the rumors - it's true! Mark Patterson is working on another Solo Song Book for the guys in your chorus. Following the successful format of "Heros and Vagabonds", Mark is working on another volume of solo literature for the 2008-09 school year. We will post more information on BriLeeMusic.com as we get closer to a firm release date!

Although more than a year old, we continue to be very high on our older three solo song books:
Much of the solo literature out there is not appropriate for the young voice. Not everyone can do the 24 Italian Songs and Arias nor My Mother Bids Me Bind My Hair. Certainly there is almost no literature specifically written or arranged for the young voice. Take a look at these:
BLB001 Heroes and Vagabonds: Solo Songs for the Male Changing Voice, by Mark Patterson
BLB003 Traveling On: Solo Songs for the Male Changing Voice, by Ruth Elaine Schram
BLB005 My Heart Sings: Solo Songs for the Developing Treble Voice, by Mark Patterson
You will find more information on these solo books in the Catalog section of this web site.
BriLee Updates...
Want To Record A BriLee Music Work?
If you simply want a single archive recording for study or review, go ahead. However, if you intend to duplicate that recording with the intent of selling a CD as a fundraiser or even of giving the CD away to choir members as a memento, you will need to apply for a Mechanical License. Many of the large publishing firms use the Harry Fox Agency as their agent for issuing Mechanical Licenses. However, HFA has a 500 unit minimum and often schools don't need or want that many CDs. Then you need to apply directly to the publisher to see if they will handle the mechanical license.
BriLee Music does not use the HFA, so all applications for Mechanical Licenses should be made directly to BriLee Music, either via e-mail at info@brileemusic.com or via fax at 212-477-6996. Since it is a legal transaction, everything should be done in writing. I need the following information:
	       Your name
School, church or organization name
Address
Phone number/fax number
Name and composer of work(s) to be recorded
Name of recording (if no name is available, I'll use the name of the school, church or organization.
Number of units (CDs, cassettes) to be manufactured.
Once I have this information, your Mechanical License can generally be faxed or mailed to you within 24-48 hours.
The law (government) has established a statutory maximum fee for the Mechanical License. As of January 1, 2006, that fee is $.091 per song per unit manufactured. Example: If you want to record 2 BriLee works and make 200 CDs, the maximum mechanical fee for those 2 works is 2 x .091 x 200 = $36.40. If you intend to put 12 works on your CD, your maximum mechanical fee is 12 x .091 x 200 = $218.40, or $1.09 per CD manufactured. This amount should be built into your selling price.
Your Rights: As soon as I record the work (or have it recorded), you have the right to record the work as well. You cannot be refused a Mechanical License at this point.
Synchronization Rights
When there is video included with your recording of the music (DVD or VHS), then you should apply for a Synchronization License. There is no set statutory fee for this license, so publishers may choose to charge whatever they wish. You should figure $.10 to .20 per song per recording in this case.
If you ever have a doubt or concern about Copyright/Mechanical/Synchronization, the best thing to do is ask the publisher or copyright holder.
Submissions
BriLee Music accepts unsolicited manuscripts.
BriLee Music specializes in choral music for middle school/junior high school.
If your work is appropriate for this grade level, then I'm interested in your music.
Manuscripts must be computer generated. If you have a recording of the work, send it along. Please send only fully arranged choral works. Lead sheets will be rejected. The choral work must fit in an 8-page or 12-page format when printed. Anything longer will be rejected.
Manuscripts should be clean, and easy to read. Please don't cram the music on the page. Leave white space on the page so that if the work is accepted for publication, there is plenty of space for editorial markings.
Send all manuscripts to:
BriLee Music Publishing Co.,
c/o Carl Fischer Music
65 Bleecker St.
New York, NY 10012

Please do not fold your manuscript. Send it flat
Be sure to enclose a stamped addressed envelope if you want the manuscript returned.
Include your address inside the envelope/package. Sometimes the post office will obliterate the return address on the outside.
Review may not happen as fast as you like, but I will do a thorough review when I get to it. Patience is the key. My review time is generally from mid-April to mid-October. If you send your manuscript at another time, it may sit for a few months before the review process begins. (It is now April 3 as I write this and I probably have some 75 manuscripts ready for review. I will get to them as quickly as I can.)
At the beginning of the review period, I need everything—folk arrangements, Latin, originals, Christmas, spirituals, all voicings. As the review period comes closer to the end and slots in the print program begin to fill up, then sometimes I need specific things to plug certain holes in the print program.
If you have questions about your review or if you feel I need a nudge, my e-mail is info@brileemusic.com.
Note 1: Learn the catalog. Go to www.BriLeemusic.com and see what's in the catalog. Although I accept sacred materials, they can't be too sacred or doctrinal. They must be appropriate for public school use. Please, nothing cutesy. Clever and well written, yes, but not cutesy.
Note 2: One work will not make you a household word among music teachers. If you are new to the BriLee Music catalog, send me 2-3 things to review—but not 20.
Note 3: Learn to accept rejection. It's part of the process. We will reject about 350 works each year. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Don't give up. If you have never tried to have your music published, be like a Nike commercial: Just do it.mailto:info@brileemusic.commailto:info@brileemusic.commailto:info@brileemusic.comhttp://www.BriLeemusic.com/shapeimage_4_link_0shapeimage_4_link_1shapeimage_4_link_2shapeimage_4_link_3
