Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra

Amanda Harberg

Theodore Presser Company

Piccolo, Piano

114-42298 - Score and Parts - $31.99

See Inside (JPG)

Cast in three dramatically contrasting and colorful movements—an elegant opening reminiscent of a Classical Sonata-allegro, a tender lullaby, and a closing, raucous scherzo—Amanda Harberg's Concerto For Piccolo and Orchestra evolved from her piccolo sonata, following a commission from Philadelphia Orchestra piccoloist Erica Peel.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who led the premiere, praised the concerto as "an extraordinary addition” to the piccolo’s limited repertoire. He notes that "Amanda’s creativity and unique voice are on full display in this work. Simply in choosing to explore the piccolo’s middle and lower voices, she quietly shrugs off the mundane and explores the unexpected. This isn’t performative, or different for the sake of being different: Amanda simply sought to highlight a particular aspect of the piccolo’s beauty which is often overlooked. This spirit—of curiosity for curiosity’s sake, of seeking out hidden loveliness as opposed to what is immediately apparent—pervades Amanda’s work."

Harberg's piccolo concerto will undoubtedly remain an important and beloved fixture of the instrument's repertoire for years to come, rewarding listeners with its individual blend of new and old.

BF149 - Score and Parts - $16.99

Clara Schumann was already established as a successful concert pianist and composer in 1843 when she published her second book of songs set to poetry, Sechs Lieder, Op. 13. By this time, at the young age of 24, she had been married for three years with two children and proven adept at managing her family and her musical career simultaneously. Her virtuosity as a pianist was evident in the demanding accompaniments to these lyrical vocal melodies that expressed contrasting themes of love and longing; intimacy and loss; lightness and darkness. The singing style of the flowing musical phrases translate beautifully to the violin, allowing instrumentalists to explore the brilliant vocal compositions of a significant historical composer.

Handwerks Music

494-03202 - Full Score - $9.95

Renewal was written for the wonderful Brazilian guitarist and my good friend, Joao Luiz. It traverses a gamut of emotions experienced during the initial year of the pandemic. The opening use of harmonics and the initial thematic material is contemplative. An energetic and edgy Samba follows, morphing into a terse and anxious section. A more hopeful recapitulation ensues featuring a joyful jazz waltz. More harmonics sprinkled with unresolved harmonies draws Renewal to its questioning conclusion.

James Hewitt (1770-1827) wrote the original piano sonata that this arrangement comes from. Hewitt, a great admirer of George Washington, wrote this piece to tell the story of the pivotal Battle of Trenton, adding it to the then-common genre known as Battaglia music. The piece begins with the crossing of the Delaware River, to the battle and lament for the dead, to the final dance-like celebration of the victory. Somers' arrangement features an instrumentation that is of the period in which the original was written while simultaneously incorporating Somers' great storytelling ability through music.

With endlessly imaginative timbral and textural invention, Chen Yi weaves an ethereal and alluring nocturnal tapestry of sounds in Night Thoughts. The melodic construction is often gestural and freely chromatic, yet at other times openly melodic, with a sense of folk-like spontaneity. Special techniques like key slaps, exaggerated vibrato, trilled glissandi, and struck piano strings add interest as various combinations of instruments and registers are explored, until the music drifts finally and hauntingly into the night.

Listeners may sense an affinity in sound with the music of Lowell Liebermann, Al-Ahmad’s teacher, even as the composer’s original personality emerges from the conversation between her many stylistic interests in this stunning and artistically demanding work.

To his popular Dialogues for Euphonium and Marimba, and Divertissement for Violin or Viola and Marimba, Samuel Adler adds Doubleplay, a concert etude for two marimba players on one instrument. Thrilling and winsome, much of the interest of this challenging work derives from its perpetually shifting textures. Often, the sinewy melodic line passes seamlessly from one player’s hands to the other’s. At other times, one player accompanies the other, or they briefly join in a shared gesture before scampering off again. Through all of these changes, the rhythmic flow of the music remains remarkably uninhibited. A welcome addition to the small repertoire for two marimba players on one instrument, Doubleplay is a wonderful new work for recitalists, and for teachers in search of a challenging duet to learn with a student.

Only rarely have I been moved to, or been asked to compose vocal solos. Choral music for concert or church use I have composed. But only rarely have I read poems which I felt would be enhanced by music.

One such was an excerpt from the Invocation which begins Stephen Vincent Benét's "John Brown's Body". Even when I first read it as a 17-year-old I knew there was music for it. I kept it it my mind for a quarter of a century until I finally had the musical language I needed for the exquisite picture.

The songs with texts by Penny Harter were written by her for the purpose of being set to music by me. "The People Who Walked in Darkness" having been so famously set by Handel, I took as a challenge.

The final two poems are by me. Each paints a picture which did included the use of music. Postcard is inspired by Verdi's use of Spanish gestures in Don Carlos.
