"Safe" Sextet

(S. R33-L45-R[pass it once]78)

P. D. Q. Bach (ed. Prof. Peter Schickele)

Theodore Presser Company

Piccolo, English Horn, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Contrabassoon, Celesta, Harp

114-42120 - Score and Parts - $45.99

See Inside (JPG)

According to Professor Peter Schickele, P.D.Q. Bach’s “SAFE” SEXTET has been so named because its manuscript was the only object left behind when burglars made off with the valuables from a hotel safe. The work makes use of many innovative sounds, such as a twangy, out of tune harp, rattling contrabassoon keys, and unexpected blues licks. Made up of several sections played without a break, the “SAFE” SEXTET highlights P.D.Q. Bach’s “unique” approach to musical pacing and drama, including a chaconne that transforms into a romantic 1950’s ballad.

Un Bal

Movement 2 from Symphonie fantastique

Hector Berlioz (arr. Jeremy McBain, ed. Elena Daughtery)

Balquhidder Music

BQ205 - Score and Parts - $12.99

See Inside (JPG)

“Un Bal” is the indelible waltz movement from the pivotal, romantic-era work Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz. It is arranged here featuring both the distinctive obbligato cornet solo, rarely included in orchestral performances, and the beautiful cantabile melodies shared by the strings and winds. The obbligato solo was written as an afterthought in Berlioz’ score and was first performed and perhaps intended for a special concert at the Théâtre-Italien Paris in May of 1844. The obbligato solo was likely premiered by Berlioz’ favorite cornet player Jean-Baptiste Arban, best known today for his essential trumpet method and popular theme and variation pieces for cornet. The present arrangement of “Un Bal” is transposed up a half step from the original key of A major, thus making it more accessible for the Bb cornet or trumpet.

Naturally, his treatment of the classic piano trio scoring is not something performers will want to miss! Composed for the Ahn Trio—who have recorded Ewazen’s The Diamond World for piano trio and drum set (also written for them)—this trio is a substantial, sunny, and enthusiastic work, full of rhythmic verve and candid tunefulness. Textures ranging from heavy to shimmering keep the musical surface fresh and unpredictable, while the composer’s deft handling of classical forms creates a subtle, unbroken thread that carries the listener from beginning to end.

Three Inventions

Eric Ewazen

Theodore Presser Company

Piano

110-41791 - Full Score - $14.99

See Inside (JPG)

Eric Ewazen’s THREE INVENTIONS were inspired by Bach’s Two-part Inventions, yet they sound thoroughly like Ewazen. Originally composed for harpsichord and adapted for piano later, Ewazen’s inventions maintain a pure “one note per hand” texture until their final chord, with strong-but-free imitative counterpoint between the two voices. While Ewazen may be best known for his wind music, he is a pianist himself, and composers’ works for their own instrument are a direct insight into how they write for their own performances. The harpsichord version of THREE INVENTIONS is also available as a separate publication.

Toccata

Eric Ewazen

Theodore Presser Company

Piano

110-41835 - $12.99

See Inside (JPG)

Although TOCCATA was originally conceived for harpsichord, the 6½-minute showpiece is notably pianistic. It is full of pedaling, surging and swelling hairpin dynamics, and dramatic effects in the extreme registers. As with baroque toccatas, Ewazen’s main theme is an energetic perpetual motion with repeated and stable “anchoring” notes. However the overall work is a dramatic argument between that central theme and opposing harmonic styles, long notes interrupting the rapid fire, and a tug-of-war between triplets and sixteenths.

Magnolia Suite

R. Nathaniel Dett (ed. Lara Downes)

Theodore Presser Company

Piano

140-40133 - $19.99

See Inside (JPG)

Deeply inspired by the music and mission of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Nathaniel Dett’s piano music springs from the late Romantic traditions of florid texture and embellishment, along with programmatic titles and raw emotion. It is notable for melody writing inspired by and paraphrasing African-American song. This edition by Lara Downes provides a clean, new engraving that corrects the many errors and unclear indications appearing in the historical printing.

Best known for his settings of spirituals and influence on Dvorák, Henry T. Burleigh was a celebrated baritone, and a prolific composer of original works. This suite of six atmospheric scenes of the American south, inspired by Black musical and cultural traditions, is well within reach of intermediate pianists and artistically suited for professional recitals.

P3335 cover

Two Impromptus

Ulysses Kay

Carl Fischer Music

P3335 - $14.99

See Inside (JPG)

Mentored by the likes of William Grant Still, Paul Hindemith, and Howard Hanson, Kay was an impressive composer by any metric, winning a Fulbright Scholarship, the prestigious Rome Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship and a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship. Kay favored neoclassical tendencies in his works, featuring lyricism, contrapuntal textures, clear formal designs and a tonal, yet chromatic harmonic vocabulary, all of which are evident in his Two Impromptus from 1986. The two impromptus are contrasting, the first beginning with a moody, angular adagio and maintaining its meditative state throughout. The second is faster, beginning with a flowing allegretto, with a quasi-tonal harmonic sensibility that is characteristic of Kay’s particular brand of neo-classicism, and a beautiful, lyrical melody that begs to be sung. The pieces could be performed just as well separately as together. For the intermediate to advanced pianist.

Rhythmic drive and lyric urgency point the music ever forward in Eric Ewazen’s GOLDEN GATE QUINTET (formerly Quintet for English Horn and Strings), without any angst for what might come next. The solo line is held aloft by churning strings through fluid meter changes in the first movement (Allegro ritmico). The second (Moderato) is a cantilena of remarkable tenderness, reminiscent of a berceuse with its recurring rocking accompaniment, and enriched by dialogue throughout the ensemble. Movement three (Allegro molto) is a shimmering, virtuosic impression, rarely pausing to take a breath. The finale takes the form of a bold, chromatic fugue, which broadens to an unexpected and satisfying conclusion.

What’s in a name? While the title is French for “Eight Flower Songs,” the texts are all in English. The poems’ flowers metaphorically evoke fragrance, love and loss, life and death, rebirth and regrowth. Perhaps the texture and beauty of Gordon’s music are themselves French. The 20-minute song cycle draws on poems from Wordsworth to Dorothy Parker, as well as from contemporary poets including the composer himself.
