Written about Texas’ South Padre Island, this concert and contest selection will introduce performers to easy alternating time signatures. Starting slowly to represent the sun rising, the day soon begins with a faster section featuring different ostinato rhythms, varied dynamics and active percussion writing. Performing the articulations at the indicated tempo is a challenge but it sounds good at any appropriate tempo.

This medley of traditional folk songs songs uses Clair Fairchild’s “Twelve Persian Folk Songs” as its basis. Fairchild took care to preserve their original authenticity by limiting all western harmony and as a result, performers will be required to replicate the songlike phrasing of the lines, rhythmic integrity and the style of the accompaniment. Essential to performance of this composition is helping performers understand that many inflections exist beyond what is written on the page. Musical challenges abound in this well-crafted folk song based composition.

Break Through is a musical representation of one’s struggle to pass through a barrier or move beyond an obstacle, either a literal breakthrough or a metaphorical achievement. The composition centers around the key of G minor to achieve a sense of dark, resonant emotion. The percussion is the heartbeat  and pulse for the introduction of the piece, while the bass drum and gong rolls create a lugubrious timbre. Melodies and counter-melodies weave in and out of the musical texture. A struggle ensues leading up to the climax, following which there is a resolution to the relative major key of B-flat. Finally, there is a transition to a recapitulation of the opening theme, moving towards a contemplative ending in G minor.

Used to brighten cities before electric streetlights, Moonlight Towers are rarely seen today. This impressionistic composition about these vanished structures, although written for more advanced ensembles, has only one flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn and trombone part. As a result, smaller bands can play this composition without having to look for a flex-band arrangement. Use this to develop the essential skills of syncopation and counting while also offering the security of only having one part for each instrument voice. An exciting contrasting selection for bands looking for a harmonically interesting composition, this also works well as a contest selection.

Fanfare for Hope was commissioned in honor of the inauguration of Father James P. Burns, the 14th President of Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. The fanfare is based on the hymn tune Melita, more commonly known as the Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, with the text “My hope is built on nothing less …” serving as the inspiration for the piece. The opening brass fanfare features the uplifting first notes of the tune transitioning into a legato treatment for the woodwinds and horns. The theme builds as the brass and percussion eventually return leading back to the original fanfare. The music ends triumphantly with the entire ensemble joining in celebration.

A Walk in the Park for Walter was composed for Avenllaneda’s John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring 3-note motif, in addition the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz  in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.

The Teton Range is part of the Rocky Mountain chain just east of the Idaho border and south of Yellowstone National Park. The name of this majestic range has its roots in the Shoshone “teewinet”, meaning “many pinnacles”. The opening measures of The Grand Tetons should be played broadly and majestically. Mixed-meters and a swing-like feeling are introduced later on, followed by more strident material leading to a recapitulation of the opening theme as the piece draws to a close.

This two-movement work is sure to be a hit at your next concert! The first movement, Tropanka (pronounced “tro-PAHN-kuh”), translates as "stomping dance" and originated in Bulgaria. One can hear two repeated notes at the end of each phrase – this is where the dancers stomp! The second movement, Patsh Tantz (pronounced “PAHTSH tahnts”) is a classic example of Klezmer, or Eastern European Jewish folk music. The title of this movement is Yiddish for “clapping dance”, and all the players get the chance to clap at certain points in their individual parts. Both movements should be played rhythmically; adding weight to many of the downbeats will help bring out the “earthy” character of the music.

Based upon a Bulgarian folk song, this musical depiction of two warriors getting ready and ultimately battling each other begins with a mysterious and ominous statement. Use the subsequent 2+2+2+3 section to teach about the use of mixed meters while also reinforcing listening and dynamic skills. Active mallet and percussion parts will challenge your more advanced players. With varied dynamics, meter changes and interesting melodic and accompaniment lines, this composition works well as a concert closer or concert and contest selection.
