Invention on Mozart's 11-tone Surprise

Daniel Dorff

Theodore Presser Company

Flute, Clarinet in Bb

114-42290 - Performance Scores - $21.99

See Inside (JPG)

“Hidden in plain sight,” the last movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 sneaks in a development section that begins with a jarring 11-tone parody of the movement’s main theme. Dorff’s oddly charming two-part invention parodies the parody, transforming Mozart’s surprise into a series of variants occasionally teasing at other familiar repertoire. Published as a set of two performance scores. Hear it on Soundcloud.

Beacon of the Bay

Stacy Garrop

Theodore Presser Company

Violin, Cello, Piano

114-42336 - Score and Parts - $33.99

See Inside (JPG)

Responding to a commission from the Newport Music Festival, Stacy Garrop turned to the historic lighthouse at Castle Hill as the inspiration for BEACON OF THE BAY for piano trio, honoring and celebrating a distinctive fixture of the coastal community’s culture. The piece achieves a remarkably dramatic arch for its small stature, from colorful, effervescent effects and delicate textures, to grand and sweeping ensemble gestures. Throughout, Garrop translates the lighthouse’s various characteristics and duties into sound: we hear it as a solitary beacon against the vastness of the empty sea, the play of waves around its base, yachts passaging gracefully on a calm day, and its steadfast, illuminating presence through a violent storm.

Slipstream

Stacy Garrop

Theodore Presser Company

Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Piano

114-42364 - Score and Parts - $37.99

See Inside (JPG)

“The first time I saw slipstreaming in action with professional cyclists, I was in awe,” says Stacy Garrop about the inspiration behind her composition SLIPSTREAM for clarinet, horn, and piano. Originally written for performers who are also avid cyclists, Garrop describes various kinds of cycling experiences depicted in the work’s three movements: “The piece opens with The Horizon Beckons. A cyclist hears an enticing call emanating from the mountains, then the cyclist starts pedaling towards the mountains in search of adventure. Riding Solo, the second movement, explores the quiet of riding alone, the beauty of the landscape, and the shifting of the light and clouds, all while we hear the bike’s wheels in constant motion. Adrenaline Rush, the third and final movement, depicts the heat of competition. We hear the constant jockeying of cyclists within a peloton as they slipstream with each other and move with the wind. At the very end of the movement, we hear sprinters race for the finish line with everything they have left in their legs.”

Silver Linings

Stacy Garrop

Theodore Presser Company

Alto Saxophone in Eb, Marimba (5-octave)

114-42377 - Score and Parts - $33.99

See Inside (JPG)

SILVER LININGS for alto saxophone and marimba was inspired by the unexpected blessings discovered in the midst of worldwide hardship during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown: more time to spend with family or on creative endeavors; resurging animal populations and decreased pollution; etc. In the composer’s own words, “SILVER LININGS consists of two movements. Groundhog Day, the first movement, is slow and brooding. It embodies the strong feeling of déjà vu that so many of us experienced early on in lockdown, as we seemed to live the same day repeatedly with minor variances to our schedules.…[The musical gestures] depict how our lives were reduced to the basic building blocks of life – wake up, eat, work, eat, sleep – as our daily activities and livelihoods were suddenly knocked down. The same gestures are utilized in the energetic second movement, Making Lemonade, except that they are spun around to reveal their silver linings…. Among the seeds of despair are also found seeds of hope, and the saxophone and marimba explore this hopefulness with great vigor and excitement.”

Theodore Presser Company

Clarinet 1 in Bb, Clarinet 2 in Bb, Clarinet 3 in Bb

114-42378 - Score and Parts - $39.99

In this textural tour de force, a trio of clarinets creates unique sound colors and gestures to dramatically depict the archangels Michael (Warrior), Raphael (Healer), and Gabriel (Heralder). Suite No. 1

"The Fable of the Tortoise and the Hare"

Don Gillis

Theodore Presser Company

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Bassoon

114-42023 - Score and Parts - $45.00

See Inside (JPG)

The vernacular charm and wit of Don Gillis’s music provides a giddy, cartoon-like set of moods for an instrumental setting of the tortoise, the hare, and their fabled escapades. SUITE NO. 1 is a perfect solution for quintets performing school and family concerts, providing delightful music and a well-loved story, plus opportunities to teach about musical contrasts. While light-hearted in style, the work is also a satisfying 12-minute addition to the quintet recital repertoire. Suite No. 3

"Gone with the Woodwinds"

Don Gillis

Theodore Presser Company

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Bassoon

114-42024 - Score and Parts - $50.00

See Inside (JPG)

Perfect for pops concerts, SUITE NO. 3 provides a quaint time capsule of jazz-inspired classical music from 1939, soon after Gershwin’s death, and just before the hard-edged modern jazz of the 1940s. In this fast-slow-fast suite, “Take Five” refers only to relaxing for a few minutes (not the song composed decades later), and “B-Bop Major” is a musical pun that must have been added later. Ancient of Days

Adolphus Hailstork

Theodore Presser Company

Organ

113-40046 - $21.99

See Inside (JPG)

Several powerful elements combine to create this striking 11½-minute organ solo. In composing for the AGO chapter of Albany, NY, where Hailstork was raised and became a musician, the composer selected the hymn tune Albany, whose text begins with “Ancient of days...” Hailstork’s fantasy on this imposing melody is built as a chorale prelude, following Bach’s method of creating concert works around phrases from a known sacred melody.

Based on the African American spiritual of the same name, Deep River “represents a slave’s visions of escape, over the river (usually the Ohio). This idea carries with it a sense of energy, of freedom, even joy and the humor they imagine upon deliverance,” says the composer. Those diverse and deeply-felt emotions are traced across continually transforming textures until “a sudden interruption by the whip brings them back down to the cruelty and sadness of the situation….Eventually, sadly, they recover, and quietly embrace again the distant vision they hope to realize someday.”

Adolphus Hailstork’s setting of this beloved Christmas Spiritual is a call-and-response dialog, with each verse set in a different way. The work starts with the soprano soloist in the lead, answered by the chorus. In the second stanza, the soloist answers the chorus; the third stanza is set as dialog between the full ensemble’s men and women, followed by a glorious coda.

This stunning addition to the bassoon repertory features dramatic outer movements framing a slow and plaintive aria. Harberg’s program notes put the drama and its crying-out high notes in the context of writing in 2021: “The composition was deeply influenced by disruptive forces unfolding around us. While this unrest made writing difficult at times and brought me to uncomfortable places within myself, the process was also full of unexpected discoveries and musical solutions I never would have found in less troubled times.” The world premiere, performed by bassoonist Adrian Morejon with the composer at the piano, is available at https://youtu.be/q1HwSPsxXr4

“Sonatina for Unaccompanied Flute was composed for Janet Carol Schlein in 1968. We had become engaged, though she was still working at Cornell’s Olin Library and I had moved back to my childhood home with my parents in Westfield, NJ, as I set up a store-front piano teaching studio. So I decided to give her something for her alone. I must admit that the idea of writing a fugue for a solo flute was a quirky challenge I set for myself that after more than fifty years still makes me smile. We were married in June of 1969.” – Paul Somers

In Corybas, Psathas blends the complex rhythms of Eastern European dance music into a highly dynamic and playful work for piano trio. Corybas is the first of two companion works for piano trio that Psathas wrote with the Mediterranean in mind; the second being a calmer, more serene ‘postlude’ to this work, Aegean. The piano drives much of the forward movement in Corybas by holding a repeating odd-metered groove while the string parts fall in and out of this texture. The strings build momentum throughout by fusing together their melodic lines with the piano’s groove, offering short syncopated accents and uniting for dramatic and thrilling phrases. All of this makes for an exhilarating addition to piano trio repertoire.
