Richard Wernick’s third piano sonata begins as a musical outgrowth of his first; what functioned as the fading away of the earlier work is now the impetus for a whole new piece, with its first movement titled “... a coda completed.” The second movement is just plain fun,“The Sunken Synagogue – with a Fiddler on the Roof” referencing Debussy’s The Sunken Cathedral, its piety interrupted by bits of scherzo-like “fiddling” perhaps more inspired by Chagall than by Tevye. The third movement, “Bits and Pieces,” takes fragments from the prior movements and develops them in fresh ways.

Stormy, Husky, Brawling takes its name from the 4th line of the poem Chicago, written by Carl Sandburg in 1916 when Chicago was the heart of the meatpacking and railroad industries. When bass trombonist Sun He commissioned Garrop, he mentioned a deep love for Chicago, adding, “I remember the first time I walked on the street in Chicago, by the corner of Michigan and Roosevelt, and how I felt the energy of this city almost brought my blood to a boil...” Those images inspired Garrop to write a piece that conveys the beating pulse of the city, as well as its grandeur.

The beautiful scenery of Tianjin’s Ning Garden and Haihe River, as well as the lively and colorful folk culture of this Chinese city (also known as Jingu), made such an impression on Chen Yi that she developed four of these scenes into a 12-minute suite for solo cello. Jingu Suite was commissioned by and written for cellist Siwen Wang, a professor at the Tianjin Conservatory where Chen Yi has been a visiting professor since 2012. The scenic movements are titled: 1. The two-movement VAPORS was composed in 2008-09, inspired by the composer’s visit to artist Constance DeJong’s studio. Leisner was moved by her large two-paneled Nitrate Painting XVI, and he has written: “You can feel enveloped by it and meditatively immersed in its cloudy or watery atmosphere, depending on how you see it. The more I looked at it, the more it gave me a similar feeling to watching a snowfall in which the snowflakes appear to be falling and rising at the same time. The first movement, Falling, came out of this sensation. Later, when I decided to add a second movement, Floating, I turned the work on its side in my imagination, and now saw a broad expanse of clouds or ocean, with spatial depth that was accompanied by a sense of depth of time. This image spawned the second movement.”

This is the full orchestra study score of the well-known Leshnoff Clarinet Concerto per its premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Ricardo Morales and Yannick Nezet-Seguin in 2016. The Philadelphia Orchestra continues to commission new works for its principals, and 2016 saw the pairing of Jonathan Leshnoff with Philadelphia principal clarinetist, Ricardo Morales. The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin, gave the world premiere of the Clarinet Concerto in April 2016. In Leshnoff's writing, the performance depends upon the soloist to "delve deep to unearth the inner meaning of the lines," while Morales admits, "I'm mesmerized by his melodic style."
