HALL OF GHOSTS was composed in 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown period; it was inspired by piccoloist Gudrun Hinze’s video for Harberg’s Prayer Project filmed in the hauntingly empty Gewandhaus Chamber Music Hall. Evocative of imagined spirits in the empty hall, the music pits dramatic silences, amid searching and plaintive phrases of the piccolo, against a lively middle section – a dialogue between the ticking of time and an instrument striving to make itself heard.

Ellen Zwilich has enjoyed a lifelong love of chamber music for mid-size ensembles and atypical scorings. Her fascination for Schubert's "Trout" Quintet has inspired several works that include contrabass along with other strings and piano. In 2020, inspired by this textural leaning, as well as by the consequences of a lengthy quarantine period, Zwilich created chamber ensemble scorings of some of her concerti for orchestra - each with its own unique chamber ensemble most suited for the work and soloist in question. For her Concerto for Bassoon, a "Trout-like" ensemble provides the nucleus of this new chamber version for for Solo Bassoon, Percussion (1 player), Piano, 2 Violins, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass.

Based on an Armenian troubadour song, I WILL NOT BE SAD IN THIS WORLD is a uniquely beautiful work for alto flute (or bass flute) accompanied by a pre-recorded audio track made purely from the composer’s own singing. The result is a fluid interplay between the live flute and the composer’s multi-tracked and processed vocal sonorities. The work was created for Marya Martin’s “Eight Visions” collection (published by Presser), and is now available as a single publication.

Responding to demand from clarinetists, Schocker created this adaptation of his best-loved work, customizing it for the clarinet’s richness of contrasting registers. Composed as a recital piece for his own performances as a flutist, Gary Schocker’s Regrets and Resolutions has been a standard in that instrument’s repertoire for over 30 years. Inspired by an 80-year-old friend’s birthday, the composer has written: “I wrote the Regrets imagining what it might be like to look back over 80 years. ‘What if I’d made different choices?’ ‘What if ...?’ The Resolutions is a forward-thinking movement, very energetic and positive, except for a brief looking-back, questioning (the 1st movement is recapped and grows), after which the music plunges back into the rhythmic finale.”

The 2020 quarantine brought about a strong trend of chamber music recorded as individual parts, then engineered into ensemble videos for webstream performances. During this time, saxophonist Paul Nolen asked Garrop if she might have a choral work to transcribe for saxophone choir, for Nolen's Illinois State University students to learn and record individually from home, to produce an ensemble video. Garrop immediately thought of her setting of the Hebrew song LO YISA GOY, on the text known in English as "And they shall beat their swords into plowshares." The text is always timely, asking that nations learn once again to listen to each other, so we may find global peace to preserve both mankind and our planet.

Mentored by such greats as William Grant Still, Paul Hindemith, and Howard Hanson, Ulysses Kay was a prolific and respected African American composer who won many accolades during his lifetime, including a Guggenheim, a Fulbright, and several honorary doctorates. All the hallmarks of Kay's characteristic neoclassical style, featuring lyricism, contrapuntal textures, clear formal designs and a tonal, yet chromatic harmonic vocabulary, are evident in his Pietà from 1950. The work’s title, meaning mercy or compassion, was perhaps inspired by Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of the Virgin Mary cradling the crucified Christ, which the composer surely would have seen during his stay in Rome upon winning the prestigious American Prix de Rome.

Clarinet Album

arr. for Bb Clarinet and piano

Erik Satie (arr. James Rae)

Universal Edition

Clarinet in Bb, Piano

UE021775 - Score and Parts - $24.95

James Rae follows the success of his best-selling "Debussy Clarinet Album" (UE021264) with this selection of arrangements of piano music by Erik Satie. It draws from the well-known "Gymnopédies" and "Gnossiennes" as well as other hits such as “Jack in the Box” and "Sonatina Bureaucratique". The clarinet part is of moderate difficulty and the frequent sparseness of Satie’s writing lends itself, for the most part, to an undemanding piano accompaniment. The end result is a book of ideal concert material for two students to tackle together.

Senchuk's Flute Concerto was commissioned by Texas Woman’s University in 2018 as a tribute to a flute pedagogue and professional, Dr. Pamela Youngblood. The concerto is in a standard three-movement form, with the first and third movements acting as fast, virtuosity bookends to the much more gentle and lyrical second movement. The first movement opens with an extended cadenza for the flute before transitioning to an energetic up-tempo dance, featuring long melodic lines for the soloist. Jazz and modal inspired harmonies, rhythmic syncopation and playful elements are used throughout the piece.

SANSKARA is a free-flowing, lyrical solo work for horn, inspired by the Sufi religion practiced by Garrop’s first composition teacher. The composer has written: “While he and I never talked about his beliefs, I was intrigued to research Sufism while studying with him. While researching, I came across the word sanskara. The word means impressions imprinted onto a person’s soul as memories from their past lives; these impressions shape the person’s desires and actions in their current life. The ideas of reincarnation, and previous actions coming to bear on someone’s next life, were fascinating to my young mind, and I crafted SANSKARA into a series of melodic waves to represent one’s past impressions.”

Legends of the phoenix are found in stories from ancient Egypt and Greece. While each culture possesses a range of stories encompassing the myth, these tales tend toward similar traits: a sacred bird with brilliantly colored plumage and melodious call lives for typically 500 years, then dies in a nest of embers, only to be reborn among the flames. Phoenix Rising consists of two movements: I. Dying in Embers represents an old phoenix settling on top of a pile of embers and breathing its last breath; II. Reborn in Flames depicts the newly-born phoenix getting its first taste of flight.

Rossini wrote an opera and named it The Barber of Seville. Featured was a character named Figaro, who sang some pretty catchy tunes, including one with the somewhat clunky title Largo al factotum. So catchy was this tune, in fact, that Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (who knew catchy tunes, having scored more than 200 films) was taken to writing a set of variations for his good friend Gregor Piatigorsky who knew a thing or two about the cello. But, devious as he was, Castelnuovo-Tedesco's variations were increasingly virtuosic, a challenge for even the best cellists. We are pleased to make the Rossini / Castelnuovo-Tedesco / Piatigorsky Figaro once again available, throwing the gauntlet down for a new generation.

The appropriately-titled RESTLESS begins with a recitative-like Misterioso, building tension as if slowly pulling back a spring until it snaps. This recoil is supercharged, cycling through a series of dance rhythms inspired by the music of Samuel Zyman’s native Mexico. Successive episodes bring the tempo gradually faster, with restless tension between folkloric harmonies and chromatically dramatic harmony. Equally dramatic is a surprise return to the broadly declamatory music of the opening, and the gradual second series of restless song and dance. UT050426 - Performance Score - $18.50

Ludwig van Beethoven left us 35 piano sonatas actually. The three sonatas from his days in Bonn, published in 1783, do not have an opus number and therefore do not appear in the canon of 32 sonatas. However, these demanding early works are not to be underestimated. Their piano technique is challenging, particularly because of their differentiated articulation while their compositional technique points far ahead into his Viennese days. The main theme of the Second Sonata in F minor (1st movement) already presages the main theme of the 1st movement of the Grande Sonate pathétique.

Prolific and influential, many call William Grant Still the "Dean of African American composers" and it’s not hard to see why. The first African-American to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony (his first symphony) performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television, William Grant Still broke barriers. Still composed his Serenade for Orchestra in 1957 on a commission by the Great Falls High School in Great Falls, Montana. The piece reflects Still’s interest in American folk idioms, with conventional melodies and harmonies that nonetheless express a fresh and individual compositional voice.

The “Black belt” refers to a region in the southern United States that was distinguished by the color of its fertile soil. It was an area whose rich economy was based on cotton and tobacco plantations that were controlled by rich white people and worked by poor black laborers. Still’s piece From the Black Belt from 1926 is presumably a musical representation of these laborers. He described its seven parts in the following ways:

  1. Li’l Scamp If one were to base his judgment on the volume of sound, he would think this little fellow, who delights in playing childish pranks, a big scamp. But the aptness of the title is determined by the brevity of the piece rather than by the volume of sound.
  2. Honeysuckle A musical suggestion of the saccharine odor of the honeysuckle.
  3. Dance This title is self-explanatory.
  4. Brown Girl A tone picture of a lovely girl.
  5. Mah Bones Is Creakin’ An old man, afflicted with rheumatism, complains loudly.
  6. Blue The lament of a weary soul.
  7. Clap Yo’ Han’s The participants in a game for children form a circle and clap their hands at intervals.

The Carmel (IN) High School Orchestra presented the world premiere of the newly-commissioned work The Knobstone Trail at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, December 18, 2019. Stephen Lias has for many years given his impressions of our National Parks and natural landmarks as musical soundscapes and was the perfect choice to commemorate this important natural resource. The Knobstone has grown to about 60 miles of rugged backcountry hiking trails, with plans to expand to even more, stretching between Louisville and Indianapolis.
