Mountain Song

Chen Yi

Theodore Presser Company

Oboe

114-42241 - $9.99

Phrasings and hints of Chinese folksongs, and the dramatic beauty of nature, are often the deep inspiration for Chen Yi’s musical worlds, along with the subtle relationship between folk arts and progressive arts. All these inspirations combine elegantly in MOUNTAIN SONG, composed for the bicentennial of London’s Royal Academy of Music.

Bach’s colossal Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin has been crowned by many masters as one of music’s greatest achievements, and even its famous Chaconne movement alone is a mountain many performers dare not scale. While the literature of several other instruments has been enriched by transcriptions of the Chaconne, Mazzanti’s heroic adaptation of the complete Partita is the culmination of many years’ work, and the only transcription specifically for the piccolo’s unique range.

Oboe, Piano

114-42252 - Score and Parts - $24.99

After decades as a renowned oboe virtuoso, Katherine Needleman was improvising at the piano during the quarantine summer of 2020 when her ideas congealed in a powerful way. Within a week she completed a 16-minute oboe sonata inspired by the world’s overlapping crises. This riveting three-movement sonata bears the title qua resurget ex favilla, drawn from the Dies Irae text referring to rising back from ashes. Needleman won the International Double Reed Society’s Inaugural Commissioning Competition by entering her own recording of this work (https://youtu.be/qnegT7SzQak), performing as both oboist and pianist from her living room. As a result, IDRS commissioned her to compose a new work for English horn and piano which was premiered at their 2021 Virtual Symposium and programmed for the live 2022 convention.

This inspiring 4½-minute solo has drama, beauty, idiomatic flashiness, and an opening theme in minor that comes back in a triumphant major key. The composer has written, “FLIGHT begins slowly, then suddenly takes off like a bird on its maiden voyage leaping from a cliff. After a torrid swing through the sky, the young bird lands gently.” FLIGHT is within reach of dedicated students, and very effective for professional recitals.

"When I was asked to compose a piece for the Texas Woman's University Flute Choir's performance at the 2019 National Flute Association Convention in Salt Lake City, the idea of using Texas as an extra-musical theme was suggested. While reading the words to the Texas Woman's University Alma Mater, the opening line of the second stanza struck me as an excellent way to describe the theme I was striving to represent as well as the piece - the history, natural beauty and the people of Texas. The piece is divided into two distinct sections. The slow, bucolic opening is meant to represent the winds blowing over the great plains of Texas. It starts gently, like a soft breeze, and grows as melodic lines emerge from the sustained texture. The second half of the piece is built on a rhythmic and animated energy that starts with fragments of the theme and builds into an exuberant dance." - Peter Senchuk

Since its initial publication c.1850, Ernst Sachse’s 100 Etudes for Trumpet has been one of the cornerstones of trumpet pedagogy. The study of etudes originally written for other instrumental idioms has long been a strategy for overcoming difficulties on any given instrument. While Sachse created many of his own etudes, he also adapted a number of studies by Georg Kopprasch (originally for Horn) and Franz Wilhelm Ferling (originally for Oboe).

This collection of etudes was originally written for low E or F trumpet. During the past century, these etudes have been used predominantly as transposition studies. Mastery of transposing skills on a variety of different keyed instruments is essential to becoming fluid in the trumpet’s notational language and navigating the vast orchestral repertoire.

As researched and edited by Michael Sachs, this uniquely updated volume includes history, practice instructions, commentary, and extensive transposition suggestions for each etude. Ernst Sachse 100 Transposition Etudes for Trumpet is a valuable resource for trumpet players of all levels.

"Some years ago I was commissioned to compose a piece for the Renaissance lute, a wedding present from the bride to her groom. The title she chose, The Passionate Pilgrim, refers to a collection of Shakespeare sonnets, poems, and works by other Elizabethan authors. John Dowland’s As I went to Walsingham was a model for this piece, utilizing a songlike melody with harmonic accompaniment, followed by a set of divisions (variations). While transcribing the score, I found myself re-composing several passages and creating a new version better suited for the guitar. " - Frederic Hand, composer

Hailstork’s exhilarating addition to the Psalm 117 repertoire draws inspiration from his elegant blend of traditional choral writing, with a spiritual-like melody in the Basses, and a tinge of Gospel fervor. The excitement of irregular meter, and independent part-writing with divisi chords, make O PRAISE THE LORD a perfect concert work for college, community, and advanced high school choirs to rise up to a challenge that is easily attained. Only Hailstork’s magical artistry could spawn such a psalm setting in a minor key that is fully uplifting to sing and hear. The CD on Albany Records may be heard at https://youtu.be/ToZPf0vKe8k
