Sandra Howard
Sandra Howard (b. 1958) is music teacher at Lake City Early Childhood Center in Lake City, South Carolina. A native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Sandra is a graduate of Furman University with a bachelor of music degree in music education. She also holds a master’s degree from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where she was a composition student of Dr. Philip Landgrave. During her teaching career, she has taught middle school general music in South Carolina, Suzuki preschool music in Atlanta, elementary and middle school music in DeKalb County, Georgia, and middle school choral music in Clayton County, Georgia, and in Henry County, Georgia. She is former choral director of Stockbridge Middle School in Henry County, Georgia, former choral director of Lovejoy Middle School in Clayton County, Georgia, and former choral director of Henderson Middle School in DeKalb County, Georgia. She also taught previously at Chapel Hill Elementary School in DeKalb County, Georgia, and at Guinyard-Butler Middle School in Barnwell, South Carolina. She became music teacher at Main Street Elementary School in the school year 2011 - 2012. She moved to Lake City Early Childhood Center in the school year 2014 - 2015.
In addition to her classroom teaching, Sandra has taught private studio piano and voice lessons. She has also coached soloists and small ensembles for GHSA and GISA literary competition.
During the time she was at Furman University, Sandra sang with Furman Singers, under the direction of Dr. Bingham Vick. She also sang with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Chamber Chorus under the direction of the late Robert Shaw. She participated in local concerts, recording sessions, and concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
Sandra Howard is a published composer of choral music for middle school choirs. Her works are published by Carl Fischer Music and BriLee Music Publishing Company, exclusively distributed by Carl Fischer Music. She has had compositions selected by J. W. Pepper for their annual Choral Experience for middle school chorus. Her compositions have been performed for GMEA in-service conference, Georgia ACDA conference, and statewide sixth grade honor chorus. Her works appear on several state festival lists, including Georgia and Texas, and have been performed in chorus concerts in many states. She was also commissioned to compose a choral work for the 2003 National Middle School Association Conference.
Sandra is also director of the Hartsville Children’s Chorale in Hartsville, South Carolina, a position she assumed for the 2012 - 2013 concert season. The Hartsville Children’s Chorale was founded in 1996 by Anna White Hill. The Children’s Chorale is an adjunct organization of the Hartsville Community Chorus and is an outgrowth of Mrs. Hill’s work with the Darlington County, All-County Choral Festival for grade-school aged children. The Children’s Chorale often performs with the Community Chorus as well as performing independently.
Sandra lives in Florence, South Carolina. She is married to Tom, who is a Certified Support Representative for ACS Technologies in Florence. She has a son, Chris, who is an 18-year-old senior at Faith Christian Academy in Florence. She also has three cats, Cuddles, Sunshine, and Cookie.
